• Burton hi and congratulations for your new release. I’ll start
this interview with the same old boring question for the bands,
asking you to tell us in a few words the KAOS’ history so far, since
I believe not many people knows you from this side of the Atlantic
ocean and especially here in Greece. I’ve seen some flyers on your
site that tells me your existence goes back in early 90’s. Where
have you been all these years?
• Jason should answer this question.
• Give us some more details about the recordings of your last album.
I mean how long you’ve been working on it, if there were any problems
during the recording and the production and things like that.
• Kaos Among Us was in the making since the conception of
the band. Its not old rehashed music, but we did use a few of the
old songs as a foundation. We built off of them. We really felt
it was important that this album came across as an epic piece of
work rather than a collection of individual songs. Kaos Amongus
Us is not a concept album so to speak but lyrically and musically
all of the songs have some kind of relation. There were no problems
with this album in the recording process or production other than
financially being that we funded the whole project ourselves. Our
engineer and co-producer Mark Keaton, who recently engineered the
new Machine Head album “Through the Ashess of empires”, was a God
send. We had so much fun and I cant wait to get back in the studio
with him. Louis Teran at Marcussen Mastering in Hollywood CA. was
also great to work with. His final touches were brilliant.
• The final outcome is really a pleasant surprise and I personally
believe it’s among the best thrash metal albums recently released
from the States. What’s your opinion about that? Are you satisfied
with the final result?
• What can I say, Im flattered....speechless. Thank you.
I have never been more satisfied and look forward to us writing
a better album.
• Your cd has been released under the label “Oblivion Entertainment”.
I really didn’t know its existence and I’d like you to talk me a
little more about it.
• O.E. is our own Label/Production Co. partnership. We used
it for the release of “Kaos Among Us” and we use it to put on our
own local shows when we feel it is necessary. We’ll see what happens
with it in the future.
• What are the sales of the album so far? Do they meet your expectations?
• It has done very well on a local level but we have a large
planet to tackle. Im looking forward to it.
• I’ve read very positive reviews and comments about “Kaos Among
Us”. Taking into account the reactions your previous release had
provoked, did you expect this reaction from the media and the fans?
• I expected a better reaction without trying to expect
too much. We focused on this recording, we have trapped our souls
on 2” reels. hehe
• To be perfectly honest with you I haven’t heard your previous
work so I’d like you to make a comparison between those two albums,
for the readers and me, regarding their differences on the production
and the music.
• In my opinion its a glorified demo. The engineer was the
pits and it was all happening at a very trying time but very necessary.
we learned exactly “how not to record an album”.
• Does the band have a leader? Who is contributing most on the writing
of the music and the lyrics?
• No. All for one or none for all. We all contribute together.
Somebody brings in an idea and then it turns out to be nothing like
what they expected. Its great . Always great surprises when we write
together.
• I have written in my review that one basic characteristic of “Kaos
among us” is its musical and lyrical aggression. Which is your main
“source” of inspiration during the writing process on both aspects?
• All you have to do is stop and take a good look around
and you will see what we are talking about and feeling. Kaos is
truly Among Us.
• Do you agree with my opinion that the vocals on your cd are closer
to hardcore than to the ones thrash metal bands used to have back
in the 80’s? Do you think that this is the main feature of modern
thrash bands, especially when these are originated from the States?
Why do you believe they choose this aggressive style of singing?
• I find it very interesting that there have been so many
comments relating us to hardcore music. It doesnt bother me at all,
but hardcore is definately not a major influence. We just let the
music come out. If thats how it is then thats how it is. we are
not trying to have a certain sound. Jason found his natural agression
on this album. Im scared to see what he does next. He just keeps
progressing.
• The States were famous for the Bay Area bands, but in the mid-90’s
this scene started to fade out, or at least this is what I believe.
I’d like to know your opinion about that and if things start changing.
Do you believe in its revival?
• What a sad time in the Bay Area. Everything fell apart
and its all because of Nirvana. Grunge is gone and Metal is coming
back with a fierce vengeance.
• I’ve seen in your website that you have performed live many times
and as a support group for some famous bands. Is the reaction of
the fans positive when they first listen to your songs? What do
you choose between the studio and the scene of a club or theater?
• We love playing live. Thats where we get to let it all
out. Thats my drug of choice. Its a total rush. Nothing like the
studio though, colaberating and bringing our creations to life.
• Have you scheduled any live performances for the future? Is there
any possibility to travel overseas?
• Which are your main influences as a band? Does all KAOS’ members
share the same interests in music?
• We come from the same Bay Area School of Metal.
• What about you especially? Which kind of music do you prefer to
listen on your free time and which are your favorite bands or albums?
• Mercyful Fate “Don’t Brake the Oath” Kiss “Destroyer,
Rock n Roll Over” Metallica “Ride the Lightning” Kreator “Terrible
Certainty” New Carnal Forge “The More You Suffer” (Just to name
a few that immediately comes to mind)
• Before closing this interview I’d like to ask you for your future
plans. I mean about new songwriting and a new album.
• Burton thank you very much for your time. It’s been a pleasure
talking to you. I wish all the best for you and KAOS. You may close
as you wish.
